May Newsletter Full Article Bonus – Trick Throttle Cable Routing System
Ever look at your kart and wonder why the throttle cable adjustment is so far away from the throttle pedal? Ever think to yourself that as beautifully engineered as your kart is why does the throttle cable look like an after-thought that has never been addressed since the first kart was invented in 1959. Well, luckily for us Roger Hargens of Prospeed Components did and has come up with the best throttle cable routing system I have ever seen. Not only is it beautifully engineered, it is 100% functional in its purpose, completely eliminating the trailing throttle understeer caused by most kart’s current throttle cable set-up. The system is so cool, almost everyone that saw it on my kart at the SKUSA SpringNats last weekend has vowed to get one. Once installed, it looks like a factory part worthy of its place with the rest of your kart’s components.
The kit comes complete with everything you need to convert your system as shown to the right. Installation is easy and takes about 5-10 minutes. Simply remove your bumper bolt and replace the nut with the black throttle cable adjustment post (the far right piece in the picture to the right) which is nicely machined to fit a 13mm wrench for tightening purposes. Unscrew the throttle cable adjuster out of the chassis and reinsert into the post. Next, attach the two throttle routing clamps to the chassis. I found that if you put one clamp about 3 inches away from the post (as shown in the picture to the bottom right) and the other clamp on the kart’s waist by the seat the cable will route perfectly without the need for any zip ties for a clean look. As a nice touch, the kit also comes with a sleek non-crimping throttle cable clamp. Tighten the clamp onto the cable, double check that you have full throttle and you’re done.
As I mentioned above, this system is as much about function as form. If you look at the throttle cable now, you will notice that it attaches to the throttle pedal at an angle AWAY FROM YOUR FOOT AND ANKLE as opposed to attaching straight to the pedal (refer to the picture to the right). So, if you suffer from a turn-in to mid-corner throttle induced understeer with your current set-up because your ankle keeps hanging up on the throttle cable, this is your solution! Prospeed only sells through their local dealers so get on the phone with your kart shop and tell them you want one. All aesthetics aside, the elimination of unwanted throttle induced understeer alone will make this the best $50 you’ve spent on your kart for a while.
